JOHOR BARU: There are downsides to the upside in surging demand for hotel rooms following the reopening of borders and tourists flocking back.
The downside is the shortage of labour and the lack of English Language competency.
It is understood that tourists do not visit places just for the facilities and attractions.
They want their enquiries and curiosities to be met with speed. This is where a good command of the English Language is regarded as an asset for personnel in the tourism industry.
Malaysian Association of Hotels (MAH) Johor Chapter chairman Ivan Teo said in the hotel industry, it is not uncommon for tourists to use English as the main medium of communication.
